Czech Lion

The Czech Lion is the most prestigious Czech film award, which has been awarded since 1993. Films are evaluated based on votes by members of the Czech Film and Television Academy, which consists of leading figures in Czech cinematography and aims to develop and promote Czech film art.

For the 25th anniversary of the awards, the Rückl glassworks was chosen and was responsible for the design of the new statuette for the Czech Lion Award, as well as its implementation. After several years, the production of the statuette returned to the Nižborsk glassworks, where the original Czech Lion statuette had been produced for years, and Rückl once again became its proud manufacturer .

The author of the new design is Rony Plesl , a renowned Czech designer , university lecturer and former artistic director of the Rückl glassworks.

"The lion's mane is decorated with a point cut, the base is decorated with stars. The statuette carries elements that are typical of the Czech Sky collection of the Rückl glassworks. When creating the design, I was inspired by the poetics of Josef Lada and the morphology of Czech Cubism ; I wanted to create a friendly and kind lion," explains Rony Plesl.

The stars on the base are not only used as a reference to the iconic motifs of the Rückl glassworks , but are also a typical example of Czech glass-cutting morphology , and last but not least, they refer to the brilliance of Czech film stars .
